CanadTV on Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube

These instructions cover every Amazon Fire TV device — Stick Lite, Stick 4K, Stick 4K Max and the Fire TV Cube. Because the app is not carried in the Amazon store, the install is a sideload, which sounds harder than it is.

Fire TV Stick

The three parts of a Fire TV sideload

Amazon does not carry IBO Player in its own store, so the file has to come from elsewhere. That process is called sideloading, and it breaks into three clear parts: install the Downloader app, change one setting so Fire TV will accept the file, then fetch the package with Downloader.

None of it is risky and none of it voids anything. Amazon simply defaults to a closed store, in the same way a phone defaults to a closed app store, and the switch to allow other sources sits in plain sight under Settings.

Work through the three parts in order. Skipping straight to the download always fails at the same point — the permission step — and people then assume the file is broken when it is not.

  • Covers Fire TV Stick Lite, 4K, 4K Max and Fire TV Cube
  • Uses the free Downloader app from the Amazon store
  • One permission switch, then a normal install
  • No rooting, no computer, no USB cable needed

Before you begin. Keep your welcome email open. Every step needs the same three values from it: the server address including its port number, your username and your password. Copy them precisely: a stray space caught on the end is what trips up most first logins.

Step by step

Work through these in order. Every value you need comes from your CanadTV welcome email.

  1. Find the Downloader app

From the Fire TV home screen move to the Find menu and choose Search. When the on-screen keyboard appears, type Downloader. The app usually shows up as the first suggestion — move to it and press OK.

  2. Install Downloader

Select the app to open its page, then choose Download. When it finishes, a prompt asks whether Downloader may access your media storage. Choose Allow, otherwise it cannot save the file it is about to fetch.

  3. Allow installs from Downloader

Go back to the Fire TV home screen, open Settings, then My Fire TV, then Developer options, then Install unknown apps. Find Downloader in the list and press OK so the toggle moves from OFF to ON.

  4. If developer options is missing

Some newer firmware hides that menu. Open Settings, then My Fire TV, then About, and press OK on the device name seven times. Developer options then appears in the previous menu, and you can return to the step above.

  5. Download the package

Open Downloader and move the highlight onto the address box sitting directly above the yellow Go button, then press OK. Enter the download address supplied in your CanadTV welcome email, or the official IBODEV address, then choose Go. Leave the box alone while the file transfers.

  6. Install and open

When the download finishes the installer opens by itself. Work through it with OK and Next, then choose Open. A first-run message appears; press OK and the dashboard loads. You may delete the downloaded file when Downloader offers.

  7. Pair the device

From the dashboard, open the profile icon and copy down the two values shown under Device Info: a MAC address and a device key. Using a phone or laptop, load the IBO Player site, pick Manage Playlist, sign in with that pair, then choose Add XC Playlist and paste your CanadTV server, username and password.

  8. Restart and arrange the grid

Hold the home button on the Fire remote, close IBO Player fully, and reopen it. Your channels and on-demand library are now present. Open Settings, then Manage Categories, to hide groups you do not want and push your regular channels to the top with favourites.

Fire TV problems and their fixes

Downloader will not fetch the file

Nine times out of ten the address has a typo. The Fire remote keyboard makes this easy; retype slowly, and remember the address is case-sensitive after the domain.

Install fails immediately

The unknown-apps permission is off, or it was granted to the wrong app. It must be granted to Downloader specifically, not to any other entry in that list.

Buffering on a Stick Lite at peak times

The Lite has less headroom than the 4K models. Switch the Live TV player engine in Settings, and prefer a wired adapter or the 5 GHz band where available.

Once the Fire TV is running

Your single device authorisation now sits with the Fire stick. If you want it on a phone instead, unpair here and follow the Android guide — moving it is free and takes a minute.

Browse everything now available to you on the channel lineup page, and read the main IBO Player guide for the platform-independent detail on settings, favourites and player engines.
