CanadTV on a Windows laptop or desktop

Plenty of subscribers are unaware they can run a full IPTV grid on a laptop. The desktop build of IBO Player does exactly that, and it is the most comfortable way to test a line before committing it to a television.

Windows PC

What the desktop build is good for

A Windows machine is the best diagnostic tool you own. If a channel misbehaves on the television, checking the same channel on a laptop tells you within seconds whether the problem is the stream or the television. That alone makes the desktop build worth knowing about.

It is also genuinely usable day to day. A laptop plugged into a monitor, or into a television over HDMI, gives you a keyboard for searching the on-demand library — considerably faster than picking letters with a remote.

Two requirements are worth stating up front: the build targets Windows 10 or later, and it is 64-bit only. Anything older will refuse to install, and no amount of compatibility-mode fiddling changes that.

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit only
  • The fastest way to tell a stream fault from a television fault
  • Keyboard search across the whole on-demand library
  • Same single-device allowance as every other platform

Before you begin. Keep your welcome email open. Every step needs the same three values from it: the server address including its port number, your username and your password. Copy them precisely: a stray space caught on the end is what trips up most first logins.

Other devices

Pick the guide that matches the screen you are setting up.

Step by step

Work through these in order. Every value you need comes from your CanadTV welcome email.

  1. Download the Windows installer

Get the desktop package from the official IBODEV download section, or from the link in your CanadTV welcome email. Both point at the same 64-bit build; take whichever is easier to reach.

  2. Clear the SmartScreen notice

Windows will block the first run because the file came from outside the Microsoft Store. Choose More info on the blue panel, then Run anyway. This is the standard notice for any installer not distributed through the Store.

  3. Work through the installer

Choose Next at the welcome screen. Tick the desktop shortcut box if you want an icon, then Next again. Choose Install to write the files, and Finish to launch the application straight away.

  4. Read the device information

On first launch the dashboard appears. Open the profile icon and look at the Device Info block in the top left. Note the MAC address and the device key — on a PC you can select and copy these directly, which removes the most common source of typing errors.

  5. Open the playlist manager

In any browser, go to the IBO Player website and choose Manage Playlist from the top menu. Paste the MAC address and device key and sign in. Doing this on the same machine means you can copy and paste rather than retype.

  6. Paste in your CanadTV line

Choose Add XC Playlist and paste the server address with its port, your username and your password from the welcome email. Give the playlist a name and save. Copy and paste each value rather than typing it; a trailing space is invisible and will fail the login.

  7. Restart the application

Close IBO Player completely from the taskbar and open it again. The Live TV, Movies and Series sections now carry your CanadTV content, and the programme guide begins downloading in the background.

  8. Set playback preferences

Open Settings and choose the Live TV and VOD player engines. On Windows the difference between engines is more noticeable than on any other platform, so if a stream tears or stutters, change the engine here before touching anything else.

Windows problems and their fixes

The installer refuses to run at all

The machine is 32-bit, or running Windows 8.1 or earlier. There is no supported path on those systems; use an Android device or a television app instead.

Video tears or drops frames

Change the player engine in Settings first. If that does not settle it, update the graphics driver — an outdated display driver causes this far more often than the stream does.

Login rejected despite correct details

Paste the values rather than typing them, and check for a space captured at the end of the password when you copied it. This is comfortably the most common cause of a failed first login.

Once Windows is running

Keep the desktop build installed even after you move to a television. When something misbehaves, it is the quickest way to prove where the fault actually sits before contacting support.

Browse everything now available to you on the channel lineup page, and read the main IBO Player guide for the platform-independent detail on settings, favourites and player engines.

Anything still not behaving? The support desk answers in under twelve minutes during opening hours, and the questions page covers the recurring cases.
